Junction Scheduler

Make entire rail networks more efficient by optimising train movements through junctions.

Minimise Rail Network Delays and Costs with Junction Scheduler

A TTG Energymiser® module, Junction Scheduler works in trains fitted with C-DAS or similar solutions to provide rail traffic management functionality. Junction Scheduler automatically re-plans train movements through junctions to minimise delays at an individual junction, or a network of junctions. It does this by resolving conflicts automatically in real-time, while also considering energy use – important for congested rail networks.

Junction Scheduler also helps produce significant improvements to on-time running and reduces costs due to better scheduled, smoother train flows and on-time arrivals. It also decreases energy use as train stoppages and start-ups are minimised. Asset wear and tear is also reduced by minimising the amount of braking required.

Automatically optimise junction movements and timetables

Junction Scheduler compares the estimated arrival times of all trains with or without DAS at a junction based on their location to the earliest arrival time and priority rules. It then uses an optimisation calculation to automatically adjust timetables to avoid or minimise delays through the junction. By linking multiple junctions together, train flows can be optimised from origin to destination, keeping trains in the right order and right time.

Make trains run to schedules

Junction Scheduler plans a sensible arrival time at the junction for each train. The arrival times allocated to trains are calculated to ensure that trains approaching the junction are spaced with appropriate headways. This means that the likelihood of trains encountering restrictive signals is reduced or eliminated. Junction Scheduler has been successfully used at a Heathrow Airport junction and showed that 75% of delays could be avoided.

Monitor trains and junctions in real-time

Junction Scheduler monitors the trains approaching a junction and for each train:

  • Determines achievable arrival times.
  • Allocates junction occupancy intervals.
  • Calculates revised arrival times, and
  • Sends updated arrival times to DAS-equipped trains.

Trains equipped with DAS can then adjust their speed and driving modes, so they arrive at junctions at the adjusted times.

Gain rail network insights with business intelligence

Junction Scheduler generates precise train running data and has a user interface and web-based reporting function. This data can then be used for timetable performance analysis and improvements. Junction Scheduler can also integrate with other business intelligence systems. Operators can calculate savings based on train stoppage reductions and have this extrapolated to consider cost delays, fines and other KPIs.

Integrate Junction Scheduler with other systems

Junction Scheduler operates as a standalone system or can integrate with third-party traffic management systems. It interfaces with Google Maps which enables users to see real-time train positions on an interactive map. Junction Scheduler can also integrate with other systems to create a truly ‘digital railway’.
